Still Looking for My Game Paycheck

I was talking to a Warcraft guildmate a few days ago about this IGE thing and selling ingame items for real world cold, hard cash. My way of thinking … when I run the numbers, people are making five bucks or so an hour by selling game items and gold.

That’s just not for me. I could do actual work and impress my boss with my dedication and extra production AND make a helluva lot more than 5 an hour. And, there’s that little thing where you could be fucking over e-friends by selling game shit they could use themselves, but that’s Advanced Gaming Ethics 201.

If IGE “consultants” solo all the time, doesn’t seem like they’re screwing anyone other than themselves (5 an hour? *spit*) and a faceless corporation.

So I asked if he had ever ebayed game shit and, to my great surprise, he said he had in EQ, and if he was soloing in Warcraft, he’d do the same again. Now, we had been guildmates in EQ also, but towards the end of the EQ years, when most of us had moved on to other things, he had stayed behind and, as I know now, 2-boxed the hell out of the upper zones and IGE’d the plat. Paid for his new computer with his earnings, as he tells it.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

In the old days, we had to walk to the pizza joint uphill both ways because we didn’t have money for the bus and our beater was unresponsive (yet again) and we had to pay for the pizza with change because that’s all our on-campus jobs paid. Loose change.

And no way could we use the monthly allowance from our parents for pizza because that was already spent on the EQ subscription and other stuff that we bought just for show like books and essentials like weed, which, in hindsight, was probably just oregano because it didn’t really do anything when we toked, although my breath was surprisingly fresh.

And fergitabout delivery because that was for rich people, like the grad assistants, and the delivery dude would just briefcase it anyhow and the only thing worse than a briefcase job was some noob guild asshat that would aggro the portal area and bring that shit to the wall when we’re trying to do the naked CR from the first two breakin attempts.

Then we had to run back from the pizza joint because we told the guild “afk fas” which indicates that it won’t be a 30-minute afk and maybe our final piece of Planar armor would drop and that would suck hardc0re if we weren’t there to /random for that shit, and for sure! our pretend online GFs and/or BFs (not that there’s anything wrong with that) would leave us for a fully-planar dude that was starting his own Planes-capable guild. Asshole.

And we liked it!

The apocalypse has arrived.

No Shortage of Idiots Yet

Here’s yet another example of someone that SHOULD BE RUN OVER BY A BUS THEN BURIED IN AN UNMARKED GRAVE.

Thread title: I’d rather lose XP, not gold for dying.

On most days, I’d rather have no death penalty at all, being the lazy SOB that I am (hmm, does that make me a bleeding heart gamer?), but I realize death penalties are a necessary evil. I guess.

I didn’t read on to see if this fucking idiot the author had played EQ at all (or CLAIMED to have played EQ) — mostly because I want to pull the remaning clumps of hair out of her undead skull — but, losing experience is far worse than paying a gold penalty for an untimely death.

Experience loss and its evil offspring, LOSS OF LEVEL, were responsible for reducing grown men to tears in EQ-Classic. So dreaded were these two, that we had an entire system to avoid invoking their wrath; as everyone knew, we were in grave danger right after dinging a new level.

Until we had a “safety margin” in the new level, we avoided raiding, GM events, boss mobs, dangerous camps, high cliffs and dueling … because EQ never got that dueling shit fixed.

Not that I ever cried when I lost a level.

I’m more of a punch a hole in the wall and/or shove everything off the desk while blaspheming kind of player.
