Bam! PoP! WoW!

(Do you see how punny the titles can get because I don’t have summer interns to write my headlines?)

EverQuest 2’s first Fan Faire came to pass last week in beautiful Las Vegas. Here’s an official forum thread with the details. Don’t forget to check the 2nd reply on that thread with the SOE pics … including Smed (I could take him) and (creepy) Curt Schilling.

Also, aggrome has quite a few posts covering the festivities: this one is the first in the series.

Now, here’s my story from a past EverQuest Fan Faire. True story and I’m sticking to it.

If you’ve been around online gaming for more than two hours, I’m sure you’ve heard one player threaten to beat another player’s ass … IRL! If you’ve been around online gaming for more than three hours, I’m sure you’ve felt the same way yourself. Oh if only we could reach through the monitor and choke the life out of the asshats, our gaming experience would be that much richer. And asshat-free!

As usual, it will be hard to keep all the players straight, but here’s the setup: An EverQuest Fan Faire, couple of years ago, my guild had a gathering for those attending, to meet and greet … guildmates, servermates, and some of the server GMs drank the free liquor, also.

Where’s the Frog Dude?

Over on plaguelands, Krones wrote an ode to one of the original EverQuest dudes, Kendrick, including a list of the design projects he supervised. I was vaguely aware of Kendrick when he was with the VI/SOE Collective, not in the way that Krones knows everyone’s resume, but more as a disgruntled player that took four-plus years to escape from the hamster wheel.

I certainly remember when the mass exodus was announced and a good portion of the old skool VI left for greener pastures. Initial reaction … have a nice life. Later reaction … damn, maybe they were the ones holding this thing together. The game certainly changed under SOE’s sole reign, whether that was inevitable as the game matured or was due to management, I wouldn’t know.

I always hazarded a guess, of course. It was because SOE was evil, the very nexus of evil.

Meow

I was clicking through some new del.icio.us links, (mmmm, net freshness), when I happened upon yet another gaming web comic strip. Man … normally I don’t even bother reading those anymore.

To do a comic strip you need to be: A. funny, and B. a good artist, and most are C. neither.

I didn’t even get past the first strip, y’know to see if he was usually funny and a good artist, because his main character had the exact same name as this crazy fuck I knew in EverQuest-Classic. Let’s say his name was Venus, although it wasn’t, so don’t ask any Venuses you run across if they’re crazy fucks. (Even though they probably are, that would be rude.)

Now Venus, the character, was a half-elf chick, but Venus, the player, was a dude. (Ya, one of those shemales you’ve heard so much about.) Apparently it was Venus’ aim to roleplay a lesbian slut because he spent the latter portion of his EQ career trying to cyber the pants off of every pixelated female on the server.

At least he was carving out his own niche in the cyber game.
