A Change in the Alterac Valley Winds

The proposed changes to Alterac Valley were posted this afternoon on ye olde World of Warcraft forums.

We all love background flavor, but let’s get down to it. Nethaera said (clipped by me at will):

Each team will have a starting reinforcement count. Reinforcements can be lost in significant amounts if a tower is destroyed or if Captain Galvangar or Belinda Stonehearth is killed. For each team member death, an additional reinforcement will be lost. On the death of General Dre’Thar or Vanndar Stormpike, all reinforcements are lost and the team is defeated. At any point in time, if a team is reduced to zero reinforcements, the opposing team will win the battle. Defending your own teammates, towers, and key NPCs will be an important aspect of maintaining team resources and achieving victory in Alterac Valley.

I think I like … go on …

Warlords and their general will be more closely linked in the next patch. Pulling one is a guarantee the other will come as well. Each team begins with four Warmasters. Destroying a tower will eliminate the associated Warmaster. Unlike the current game play, however, destroying the enemy tower will not add a Warmaster to your own side.

That sounds like code for “we think we fixed that Vann bullshit.”

Where it currently takes five minutes to gain control (of a tower), the time will be reduced to four minutes. The honor for capturing a tower will also be increased.

I like, I like.

Currently, players can sometimes be sent (upon death) to their starting tunnels … players will instead respawn at a team-controlled graveyard. Should the team not have a graveyard under their control, they will respawn in the starting tunnel.

I’m on the fence about that, but ok.

Players will only be awarded bonus honor during the battle for destroying enemy towers and slaying the enemy Captain. Once the battle is concluded, bonus honor will be awarded for intact towers, a surviving Captain, and for victory in battle. The bonus honor awarded should be similar to previous totals …

And I become suspicious. I’ll bet my idea of similar totals isn’t going to be the new reality.

Lastly, we are changing NPC interactions within Alterac Valley. We have reduced the number of elite NPCs in Stormpike and Frostwolf holds as well as sent all Commanders and Lieutenants out of Alterac Valley.

Sounds interesting at least. Sometimes I pine for the old AV days of 6 hour battles and the Forest Lord and Death from Above or the epic squirmishes on the Field of Strife, but then I remember that hardly anyone had time for a 6 hour (or longer) AV, including me — boy, that honor sure was sweet.

Brewfest 2007

Brewfest 2007

There were some hotfixes applied to the world event Brewfest, namely they disabled the Dark Iron Dirf script because of lag issues.

I ran some of the nonsense quests for this event last night while the guild was whiteboarding tonight’s raid. Here’s my review of Brewfest: STOP GIVING ME MORE QUEST PIECES TO CARRY AROUND, hell I haven’t had bag space available since pre-Onyxia. Resist sets, flasks, combat supplies, daily quest pieces, faction grind quest pieces, mounts (have to carry around two now) — thank god I’ve given up on leatherworking and thank god I’m not a buff class. Who do I have to blow over there to get some MEANINGFUL bag space? Why can’t we have a bottomless bag (a TRULY bottomless bag) for quest items? Do I have to buy the expansion for that?

Prediction: The expansion will offer a must-have semi-fix for bag space. And it will involve a grind of some sort. (Boy, I really went out on a limb there.)

Bonus: Screenshot of Kagetsu of the Dath’Remar realm and his (world first?) Brewfest swift ram. (Thread with his announcement.) And of course no one cares about the ram, but are very interested in the 30k gold. Several theories are floated: buy gold, no life, daily quests grinding (ya, right), rare pattern crafter, but I don’t think anyone theorized guild bank thief. Not accusing! Just saying.

The Whatever that Happened to that One Girl

When last we left HunterSister, she and that one man-whore paladin in my guild were dating. (Here’s when last we left HunterSister) Well, they were dating — and you know when I say “dating” that’s just a code word for screwing and posting sappy, gaussian-blurred photos on our guild site — and then ALLEGEDLY she was whacked and game-stalking him and we laughed because goddamn, everyone saw that coming.

So I guess that didn’t work out (shocking), and our man-whore paladin moved on to other female gamers, eventually landing on (pun!) a female paladin in our guild.

Now, this gal was an interesting character. Friendly, outgoing, and a reasonably skilled player (that’s code for “kinda sucked, but not enough to get kicked”). After about a week of guild membership, she’s comfortable enough with us to reveal more of her personality, which is somewhat clever sexual innuendos and occasional bawdiness. Who doesn’t love bawdy? I love bawdy, I’ll bet you do too.

Un-for-tun-ate-ly, one of the consequences of a female gamer working bawdy humor is unwanted attention. I saw a few things in /guildchat that gave me pause, and I wondered if it bothered her, but she would carry on like there was no harm. Cool, because I hate policing the guild.

Then, late winter 2007, we had this huge guild meeting in Ventrilo. Planned agenda: the future, namely raiding, recruiting, downsizing (that was my agenda item because goddamn, we were just TOO BIG for a max 25-man raid scheme), and restructuring of guild leadership. Actual agenda: airing of grievances.

One of those grievances, which took up AN HOUR OF DISCUSSION TIME, was that bawdy paladin girl didn’t appreciate the similarly bawdy (my opinion) comments made in return. Summarized: she didn’t like the inappropriate comments made to her and the guild dudes often stepped over the (invisible) line when talking to her. And of course, the gentlemen officership expressed GREAT ALARM and rushed to comfort her while scolding the rest of us. Truly, most of us knew exactly who she was probably talking about — the suspects had tried to initiate outrageous conversations with other guild women in the past, however, when rebuffed, the suspects had ceased and never bothered those women again.

Isn’t that ok? It is in my opinion. Someone says something that someone else doesn’t want to talk about, the someone else says stop, and the offensive someone stops. Another crisis averted!

So, I asked her, who are we talking about, and did you ask them to stop? And, of course, as is the way of modern times, she doesn’t want to say who it is, and yes she did ask him/them to stop and he/they didn’t. Christ. I really hate that. Some dude(s) is sexually harassing her or borderline harassing and she won’t say who. How are we supposed to deal with that? Here’s how we did deal with that: Hey guys, don’t sexually harass anyone. Kthx!

Talk about an edict with no teeth. (I mean, duh?)

She seemed satisfied and the meeting crawled forward.

Few weeks after that, there’s this new level 65-ish druid in the guild and I asked the officers why in the hell were we recruiting new people when we’re already obese with members, and further, why in the hell were we inviting low levels?? Oh, that’s the bawdy paladin’s real life husband.
